Things to Consider When Buying a Monitor
The monitor resolution is the number of pixels or picture elements that constitute an image on the display, and the more pixels the sharper the image. A typical 19 inch LCD monitor has a 1440 x 900 resolution. If the LCD is 22 inches, its native resolution is 1680 x 1050 and for a 24 inch monitor, 1920 x 1200.Widescreen monitors come in various resolutions, with 1920 x 1200 for 24 inch, 1920 x 1080 for 22 inch monitors and 1600 x 900 resolution for a 20 inch. The larger the screen the higher the screen resolution, so a 27 inch monitor may have 2560 x 2440.
Higher screen resolutions mean small images and text, but the monitor can display a lot more content. If you’re a digital artist or perform a lot of photo editing work, a high resolution monitor is recommended.
1080p or HD (1920 x 1080) is the perfect choice if you’re after clarity on a 21 or 24 inch display. Most videos on YouTube and other streaming media max out at 1080p so this should suffice for most users.
A resolution of 1366 x 768 is standard HD, while 1600 x 900 is classified as HD+. These are the lower end of the HD resolution spectrum and found on 20 inch and 15 inch monitors.
Full HD is used for resolutions on 1080p HDTVs, and this is ideal for watching high definition videos and movies.
Quad HD, QHD, Wide Quad HD or WQHD refers to a resolution of 2560 x 1440. At this resolution a monitor displays quadruple the number of pixels present on a 720p HD display. A Quad HD resolution is ideal for video editing, professional photo editing, graphics design and CAD.
4K (3,840 x 2,160) is the high end for monitors today. This kind of resolution is best suited for hardcore gamers and professional graphics designers. However they’re not as widely available as 1080p HD monitors.
4K is sometimes called UHD (Ultra HD). Whatever it is called, 4K is designed for high res photo and video editing and gaming. If your monitor can support this, 4K sets the standard for gaming, movies and ultra high resolution images. 4K is also for those who want to see even the smallest details in an image.
5K (5120 x 2880) has 14.7 million pixels, seven times more than a typical 1080p. However, these monitors are not yet widely available, and they’re quite expensive.
If you want to use these high resolutions, make sure the monitor can handle it. You should also check if your graphics card needs to be upgraded as HD and 4K need a powerful computer to run.
17 Inches: 17 to 20 inches is the smallest monitor you should buy, and make sure it is in widescreen (aspect ratio is 16:10). 17 inch monitors don’t take up a lot of space, but the resolution usually maxes out at 1366 x 768.
20 Inches: look for a 20 inch monitor with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 1600 x 900 pixels. With this monitor you can watch a 720p HD movie at their proper ratio.
21 to 23.5 Inches: these monitors have a resolution of 1920 x 1080. This is the type of monitor you’re going to need if you’re going to work with HDMI connections. These are more expensive than 20 inch monitors, but the price difference has gone down and resolution is superior.
24 Inches: 24 inch monitors work at 1920 x 1200 and 1920 x 1080 resolutions.
27 to 30 Inches: 27 inch monitors can display 2560 x 1440 and 1920 x 1080 resolution. A 30 inch monitor has a native resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels. Because the price difference between the two is very small, it makes more sense to buy a 30 inch monitor.
Types of LCD and LED Backlighting
As we have explained earlier, LCD uses liquid crystals to display the images in pixels. It is these crystals that function as backlight shutter. The electrodes inside the monitor charge the crystals, and it either shuts the light out or lets light pass through.
LED monitors are, technically speaking, a type of LCD, because they rely on liquid crystals to display images onscreen. However, they use different kinds of backlights.
WLED: WLED has white LEDs along the monitor’s matrix, just to the back of the liquid crystal. WLED is commonly used in monitors because they’re inexpensive and don’t consume a lot of power.
RGB LED: rather than have white LEDs on the screen’s edge, RGB LEDs are arranged all around the panel matrix. Each of these lights is designed to produce blue, red or green light. This gives RGB LEDs access to a wide range of colors. However, they’re more expensive than WLEDs and cannot be constructed with thin profiles.
LCD Panel Types
LCD monitors use different types of panels.
In-Plane Switching (IPS): IPS provides good viewing angles, and their color reproduction is very accurate. However, their blacks are not as good as that of VA panels. The input lag and response time is slow too.
Plane-line switching (PLS): developed by Samsung, PLS was showcased in the SyncMaster S27A850D. Its viewing angles are as good as IPS but with superior brightness levels, better use of power and reduced cost.
Twisted Nematic (TN): TN panels have a fast response time (2ms or lower) and they’re also affordable. The drawbacks are low rightness and – sometimes – the color reproduction is imprecise.
Vertical Alignment (VA): VAs provides superior viewing angles compared to TNs. Their brightness levels are higher and color reproduction is better. However, the input lag and response time isn’t as good as TNs. VAs are also more expensive and have a wider profile.
HDMI: An HDMI connector allows you to use the monitor to display HD content from a Blu-Ray player, DVR-based HD satellite / cable set top box or video game console. If you want to use your monitor as a TV, HDMI connectors are necessary. But it’s not going to be an issue because HDMI connectors are standard on most monitors.
DVI: DVI(digital visual interface) connectors are also found on a lot of monitors, but some discard it in favor of HDMI. If you need a DVI connector, make sure the monitor you buy has one or there is a DVI-to-HDMI cable included.
DisplayPort: DisplayPort was developed to succeed HDMI and DVI. Compared to the two, DisplayPort supports higher bandwidth and don’t require any special connectors to obtain signals from videos. Support for DisplayPort is available in new monitors only, and there are still a lot of monitors that use legacy VGA devices.
Other Factors to Consider
Viewing Angle: how does the monitor look from various angles? Do the colors change and does the screen brighten or darken? The brightness and colors on a well-designed monitor should not be affected whether you’re viewing from the sides, the bottom or top.
Text: go to a website and try to read small text. Is it legible? Can you read clearly or does the screen give you a headache?
Color Reproduction: how well does the monitor reproduce colors? View a photo of an object or person you know well. Take a good look at the photo and if the monitor reproduces the color accurately.
Response Time: the response time refers to the time it takes for a monitor to respond to transitions in video images. The faster the response time, the better it’ll be for you.
Black Color Display: there are very few monitors that can display black. Most, if not all, display dark shades of grey. If dark shades are important to you, check how the monitor displays darkly lit scenes and if any details are lost.
Contrast: the contrast determines the difference between the deepest black and the brightest white. The higher the contrast, the more vivid the images are. The problem is that the contrast measurements used in monitors is not standardized, so you have to compare the products.
Brightness: you’ll want a bright monitor if you’re going to use the monitor for photo editing and other tasks. The brightness level is measured in cd/m2 or candelas per square meter.
The higher the cd/m2, the brighter the monitor will be. New monitors also have on screen controls or buttons so you can adjust the brightness or contrast level on the monitor. Depending on the monitor you buy, you should be able to adjust other aspects like color balance, tint, and other features and functions.
Ease of Use: the more controls and options a monitor has, the more you can customize it. However this must not get in the way of convenience.
Monitors come in different shapes and sizes, but make sure you can easily tilt the monitor up or down. Some monitors have 90 degree rotation capabilities, allowing you to switch from portrait to landscape and back. This can be a useful feature if you frequently read documents or edit web pages.

Does your graphics card need to be updated?
Make sure your computer can support your new monitor, especially if you’re upgrading to Quad HD or 4K Ultra HD. If you buy a top-of-the-line monitor but have an older computer, you won’t have the best picture quality. Check the monitor’s hardware requirements to see if your computer or graphics card needs to be updated.
What’s the Best Connection?
- Check the monitor’s ports and connections, not only for hooking it up to your PC, but also for plugging in your smartphone, camera, Blu-ray player, camcorder or other devices.
Most computer monitors have HDMI, which carries both video and audio signals. It’s excellent for playing HD content from your computer, gaming console, Blu-ray player and other devices.
The best choice for very high resolutions and frame rates, DisplayPort connectors carry both video and audio signals like HDMI. But while HDMI can only carry 4K Ultra HD at 30 fps (frames per second), DisplayPort can handle this resolution at 60 fps, giving you a much smoother picture for fast-moving games and movies.
DVI connections provide a video signal similar to HDMI, but they usually do not carry audio. The resolution they support varies. Some types of DVI connections can carry 1920 x 1200 resolution, while other types can carry more.
While HDMI, DVI and DisplayPort are all digital connections, VGA is the old analog technology. It can carry fairly high resolutions and frame rates, but you won’t get the crystal clear images that you do with DVI.
With USB ports on your monitor, you can plug in your smartphone, digital camera, Blu-ray player, camcorder or other devices, and view content on your monitor without turning on your computer.

If you plan to mount your monitor to a desk or the wall, look for one that’s VESA compliant. This means the monitor has an industry-standard hole pattern or mounting pattern on the back. Compare the weight and VESA pattern of the monitor to the weight and VESA pattern supported by the mount to make sure they are compatible.
Built-in webcams — For videochats with family and friends or videoconferences with colleagues.
Speakers — Not all monitors have built-in speakers, so add this to your checklist if you plan to use your monitor for Skype, watching videos, listening to your tunes and other audio activities. You can also buy speakers separately.
Dual-monitor stands — Lets you dock two monitors on one stand for multitasking or viewing spreadsheets side by side.
Ergonomic features — Look for monitors and stands with adjustable features, like tilt and swivel functionality, monitor height adjustment and pivot adjustment, which lets you rotate the monitor to portrait position.
