How to Pick the Best Shaving Cream?
A shaving cream should be selected on the basis of the type of your skin. Generally, people have three types of skins, sensitive, oily, and dry. If you have dry skin, you should select a cream that contains glycerin base. Glycerin allows the razor to glide smoothly on your skin without causing any cuts or nicks. The shaving cream should also contain some skin soothers such as coconut, vitamin E, or aloe.
You should select a shaving cream very carefully if you have sensitive skin. Certain shaving creams may cause skin irritation. Dry and sensitive skins are not the same. So, shaving creams designed for dry skin are not good for people with sensitive skin. Usually, shaving creams that made for sensitive skin contain certain additives, which can protect your skin from irritation. You should also select creams that are free from allergens and fragrance.
Some shaving creams contain a mild astringent, which is best for people with oily skin. Razor tends to clog while shaving, so it needs repeat rinsing. Clogging becomes worse while shaving on oily skin. Therefore, a mild astringent is helpful for reducing the amount of oil on your skin without over drying. Shaving will be easier if you can reduce the amount of oil.

Brief History of Shaving Cream
Although shaving soaps have been around for centuries, shaving creams did not actually gain large scale popularity until WWI. In 1941, canned shaving creams entered the market. The promise to provide fast and easy access to lather with a mere press of a button was a novelty that seemed intriguing for most men. In the following decades, the popularity of foams significantly affected the market for creams, which have become harder to find, especially in the U.S. In Europe, Asia or the Middle East, it is easier to find traditional shaving creams, though even there they are usually to be found at specialty men’s grooming shops or high-end drugstores. Today, shaving gels and cream foams are most popular not because they are better, but simply because they are easy to use and almost effortless to find.
Traditional Shaving Creams
This article is all about high-quality shaving creams that you have to lather yourself.
Shaving Creams are similar to lathering soaps in terms of results. Unlike traditional soaps, the shaving creams require a little less elbow grease to generate lather. The cream can be applied with either a shaving brush or your fingers. The brush has the added advantages of producing warm lather, further lifting the beard off your face, and gently exfoliating the skin.
Shaving creams are often considered the best and most effective product for a wet shave: Creams generate a rich lather without taking a lot of time, they also protect and lubricate the skin, leaving it smooth and moisturized.
Lather-up creams are sold in jars or tubs, or in small tubes for traveling convenience. They contain between 30 and 50 percent fat (usually coconut oil, an-all-natural oil that does not penetrate the skin), as well as glycerin, which is why their lather is so rich and thick, providing the best possible protection.
The British brands Truefitt & Hill, Geo F. Trumpers, D.R. Harris as well as Taylor of Old Bond Street all produce great shaving creams with a variety of different fragrances. But London is not only the home of traditional barber shops –within the last couple of years, new types of barber shops with Spa-like experiences have popped up all over town, such as Murdock London, Pankhurst, and Gentlemen‘s Tonic , just to mention a few. They have all created signature shaving and grooming products — some of which contain rather exotic ingredients (such as Babassu Oil and Manuka Honey in the Gentleman’s Tonic product) — to their customers’s approval. Now, these niche products are sold around the globe, and the quality shaving trend continues with the opening of new shaving parlors in luxury hotels in Hong Kong and Dubai.
Fortunately, excellent traditional shaving creams are not only available made in England. For example, Claus Porto is a centenary Portuguese soap manufacturer that produces shaving products under the brand Musgo Real that are highly recommended by shaving enthusiasts.
Proraso is the number 1 cream in Italian barber shops, a genuine Italian product made in Florence since the 1940s. Over all these years, Proraso has maintained its secret formula based on Eucalyptus Oil.
One of the most recent shaving product brands comes from New Zealand. Triumph & Disaster was founded in 2011 by young, enthusiastic entrepreneurs. With cool marketing and a great product, they were able to get noticed in Europe and the USA in less than two years.
How to Lather Traditional Shaving Cream
There are three options for how to use shaving cream. On the one hand, you can lather it like soap in a bowl or mug, or use your hands. You can also lather it directly on your face. First, let’s discuss the latter option:
- Wet your fingers and face or the brush‘s bristles with hot water.
- Dip your fingers into the jar to apply the cream directly on your face, or to the center of the brush’s tip. Since the cream is concentrated, two fingertips worth will do the trick. If you use a brush, an almond size amount of cream should be enough (you only have to use this much cream with a brush, and it will last you about twice as long).
- Lather up the cream on your face with circular motions using your fingers or a shaving brush.
- Again, the longer you whisk, the richer the lather, and the more your skin will be protected and your shave comfortable.
- Adding a touch more hot water will provide re-lathering for second or third passes if required, without using any more cream.
If you prefer to lather the cream in a bowl or your hand, here is the way to go:
- Fill the mug with hot water and let your badger hair brush soak up the water for a few minutes. The water will not only benefit the brush but also preheat your mug for a warm lather.
- Empty the mug and shake the water off the brush. Add the cream to the bowl and start to lather in circular motions.
- Add little drops of water and not more, as the lathering won’t work otherwise. With a bit of practice, it shouldn’t take you longer than a minute.
- Squeeze out all the lather from your brush. Check that it is thick and creamy with a delicate sheen.
- Apply the lather to your face with the brush.

Shaving Cream Foams and Gels
Generally, you should stay away from gels and foams unless it is your only choice. They often contain synthetic perfumes which are considered the number one cause of skin irritation. They also contain artificial colors and dyes, preservatives, and alcohol, all of which make the shave very uncomfortable and leave the skin susceptible to razor burn. And if that’s not enough, they often contain numbing agents that can exacerbate cuts, nicks, and irritations. Foams and gels can also contain unhealthy gases, such as isobutane or propane, which is what makes them foam in the first place. The foam that comes out of a can may appear deceptively rich, but in fact it contains lots of gas and provides very little protection for your skin. Usually, you can immediately tell whether something is a lathered foam or a canned foam when you have it in your hand. In addition, the toxic propellants from the can and gel generate a cold lather, which closes the pores and stiffens the beard (rendering it less manageable), making for a truly uncomfortable shave. You’ll yield much better results by choosing other products.
How to Use Shave Cream Gels & Foams
Selecting the Right Product
When selecting products for your wet shave you should look for products containing natural ingredients such as natural oils (coconut, avocado, almond, and jojoba) and natural essential oils. Despite their name, they are not oily, and they evaporate almost immediately upon contact with the skin. Essential oils are 100 percent natural, concentrated essences of plants, roots, fruits, or flowers. In shaving creams and soaps you will often find essential oils like Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Cypress, Bergamot, Lemon, Lime, Patchouli, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Vetyver, Lavender or Rose.
Look for products that have a few drops of essential oils blended into an all-natural base. Castle Forbes and The Art of Shaving products are very good choices to enjoy natural essential oils. While the barbershop chain and retailer The Art of Shaving belongs to the parent company of the Gillette brand Procter & Gamble, and is well known in the US, Castle Forbes is more of an insider tip. The private perfumery at the Castle Forbes in Aberdeenshire, Scotland restricts their retailers to a select number, due to the fact that they are only able to produce shaving cream in batches of 500 per year; it is definitely one of the highest performing shaving creams I tried so far.
If you have sensitive skin you should also look for shaving creams including Aloe Vera. Most ancient civilizations, including the Greeks, Romans, Persians and Indians, applied the Aloe Vera extract as ‘first aid’ for wounds, burns and other skin conditions because of its antiseptic properties. The renowned brush and razor manufacture Edwin Jagger from Sheffield in England offers an Aloe Vera-based shaving cream that performs exceedingly well.
Natural ingredients, unlike their synthetic counterparts, are biodegradable and work in harmony with the body’s natural functions and cycles. You would be surprised at how many products out there wreak havoc on your skin. It is always good to check out the ingredients list, and if the list contains a lot of the following ingredients you should consider avoiding the product:
- Chemical dyes like FD&C colors, D&C colors, and HC colors are found (green shaving gels and blue shaving foam, etc.). They are harsh chemicals that can cause allergic reactions and rashes.
- Synthetic perfumes can cause headaches, allergies, dizziness, skin rashes and irritation. Most allergic reactions from cosmetics are caused by their synthetic or artificial fragrances.
- Detergents, such as TEA, DEA MEA, and sodium lauryl sulfate are ingredients added to products to help generate foam and to strip the skin of basically everything on its surface. They can cause dermatitis and dry skin.
- Petrochemical by-products, such as paraffin, mineral oil, and petrolatum, are used as cheap substitutes to natural oils that are harmless to the skin but expensive. Petrochemical by-products clog pores and prevent the skin‘s natural respiration process.
- Any product name that finishes with -ol is an alcohol or alcohol-derivate. And anything that contains alcohol can cause skin dryness, peeling, burning, swelling, and skin eruptions.
Choosing the Shave Cream Scent
You can choose your scent either by skin type or just by personal preference:
- Scentless, lavender, and rose oils are good for sensitive skins and skins which are prone to razor burn and soreness.
- Lemon, Lime and Bergamot oils are good for skins prone to cuts and nicks
- Cedarwood, Peppermint and Sandalwood are very cleansing and caring for the skin, useful for skin prone to breakouts.
Brands like Truefitt & Hill and Geo F. Trumpers offer sample packs to make it easier to pick your favorite scents from their wide product range.
With The Shaving Cream Set, What About The Hardware?
Whether you are using a straight edge razor (typically just a foldable single blade or shavette), double edge razor (usually a Merkur or Edwin Jagger brand), cartridge based razor (common brands – i.e. Gillette, Dollar Shave Club, Schick, etc), or a electric shaver that is capable of performing “wet” – a premium shaving cream can provide a world of difference when it comes to comfort.
Most all the shaving creams listed below will work best for all different blade types listed below. However if you are coming from a cartridge based background, typically a shave cream that is latherless will be the least intimidating of all the types as they don’t require a shave brush and scuttle that require you to form a lather.
However, you definitely shouldn’t be deterred from trying any of the other shaving creams. There are plenty of great YouTube videos out there that go over the basics of generating the proper lather and some of the things you should be looking out for.
Lastly, in order to use many of the shaving creams (or soaps) to their fullest potential a shaving brush (typically made of badger hair) is a necessary tool. Therefore if you don’t already have one, we would highly recommend picking one up when you get your shaving cream.
How We Determine The Best Shaving Cream For You
While there is a lot of subjectivity to shaving cream performance in general, we tried to compensate for this during the exhaustive research process. Therefore we broke down individual components of the shaving cream itself and eventually distilled it into one overall score which you can see in the each of the sections below.
While the reviews below may only indicate a brief summary, be sure to check out each product in detail through the links provided below the reviews for a more in-depth look at the product.
We determined the best shaving cream through the following metrics:
Scent – Does the shaving cream provide a wonderful scent that doesn’t smell too incredibly offensive, soapy, or downright cheap? Will the scent completely clash with any other fragrances that you may be wearing (i.e. cologne, body spray, or aftershave). Is the product being scented through the use of “Fragrance” chemical as we outlined above?
Performance – Simply put, does the shaving cream provide a slick and rich lather that will leave your skin free of any general irritation or post shave razor burn? Also does the shaving cream actually lather well or is it simply too thin or thick that may ultimately lead to unnecessary skipping of the blade that will cause nicks and cuts?
Peer Reviews – While we have spent countless hours researching these shaving creams, its always important to understand what others think of them as well. While this may be much more qualitative in nature, we open our ears to see what other wet shave enthusiasts and thought leaders say about these shaving creams through several different avenues including online retailers, forums, video reviews, etc.
Cost – While every wishes they had an endless supply of cash, the reality is that of course isn’t true. Therefore if a shaving cream is commanding a price tag that is higher than $20, can you simply tell that the shave is going to be one that yields a higher performance?
Ingredients – While we alluded to it in our scent category, the ingredients that make up a shaving cream should be safe for use. With all the research that has been done on chemicals to date, there is absolutely no reason that you should settle for cheap ingredients that may potentially cause long term damage to your health.
Overall/Final Thoughts – While taking all the above points into consideration, we will tally every component up and deliver a final score in order to determine the title of the best shaving cream for you.
Some of the standout ingredients in this product are the Eucalyptus and Peppermint which will help invigorate your skin while conversely the Macadamia Nut and Jojoba oils (also known as Simmondsia Chinesis oil) will help increase the moisture of your skin. If you are prone to acne, oils like Macadamia Nut and Jojoba typically won’t cause an increase in acne when applied to your skin. In addition, since this is being used as a shaving product, it will cleared from your skin immediately when finishing shaving.
As with most carrier and essential oils when applied to your skin, the scent typically doesn’t last for more than an hour and will dissipate rather quickly. Therefore if you are sensitive to smells, the Jack Black Beard Lube won’t have prolonged lingering scents after use.
Oils aside, performance of the product itself will help reduce the occurrence of general skin irritation and razor bumps, especially if you come from a background of using shaving cream that comes from a can.
Given that the this solution is clear when applied to your skin (i.e. it doesn’t lather), unlike other shaving creams that leave a rich lather that is not transparent, you can see the areas that you need to shave when making the appropriate passes across your face.
Largely this product is going to be best used on a double edge safety razor or a cartridge based razor.
If you use either a straight edge razor or electric shaver (both the rotary and foil varieties), you are likely going to find alternate products within this category that will provide better results.
Given that this product comes in 3 distinct sizes the biggest bottle will be the best value at $2.19 an ounce.
However, the smaller sizes are great if you want to give the product a “test drive” and perform a few shaves to see what the results are going to be.
Being that this beard lube acts as a pre-shave oil, shaving cream, and post shave conditioner, it makes for a great luxury travel product that you can safely store in your carry on luggage for business trips or weekend getaways as its under the TSA requirement of 3.4 ounces.
For the wet shaving enthusiasts out there may be disappointed in that you will be unable to use your classic badger hair shave brush when applying this to your face. Given its texture, many of the benefits of using a shaving brush will be lost. Namely the ability to provide a gentle exfoliation pre shave as well as the ability to make your hairs stand on edge as opposed to them being matted down when the product is applied with your hands.
As with any shaving cream or pre shave oil, performance will always be optimal after a hot shower.
The eShave Shave Cream has no harmful ingredients and enlists the help of essential oils and coconut oil to create a product that is kind to your skin. And, they have a secret to making this shaving cream last you for a long time! This cream will last you up to 4-6 months when used with a Badger Hair Shaving Brush, which makes it extremely economical in comparison to a can shaving cream. On top of that, if you are wanting a super luxurious lather, just use hotter water; the foam will react and become fuller.
This product is available in four different scents and are friendly to all skin types. The first three are for normal skin:
- White Tea: A fresh scent with a slight hint of fruit that is perfect for any gentleman.
- Orange Sandalwood: A traditional manly scent that has been given a little boost with Orange essence. This is perfect for a wakeup call in the morning to start your day nice and fresh.
- Verbena Lime: Wake up your face with the soothing touch of Verbena and a zesty lime scent.
- Lavender: The scent of Lavender is relaxing and rejuvenating all at the same time. Using this cream will calm you in an amazing way. Also for normal and sensitive skin.
Besides the amazing scents offered by this brand, the ingredient list has no Parabens, Sulfates, SLES, SLS, or animal ingredients. When buying this product, you are buying quality and safety for your skin. Specifically, this shave cream helps to open your pores and soften hair which makes the act of shaving pain free and always enjoyable. The major ingredient that plays a part in this is coconut oil.
I know, coconut oil is thought to fix everything. But should you really buy into all the hype about it?
Well, yes you should!
Coconut oil is extremely beneficial to the skin. Even if all the hype isn’t true, what is true is that coconut oil does the following:
- It’s an excellent moisturizer: The oil melts into your skin without leaving any kind of residue behind, leaving your pores mess free and completely hydrated.
- You will get a deep cleanse: Because our skin is constantly exposed to things such as harsh weather, sunlight, and dehydration, it is very important to cleanse the skin and remove any left-over skin cells that would slow down regeneration of the new skin. Coconut oil helps to soften the keratin caps and make exfoliation easier.
- Acts as a shield against bacteria: Bacteria is everywhere and they are the main cause of acne. Coconut oil helps to protect the skin from pathogens which means that black heads and white heads will have a harder time forming inside the pores.
- Offers protection from sunburn: This oil is a natural SPF 4, which won’t keep you protected all day, but it is a little protection against the everyday exposure to the sun’s rays.
What has been listed above are only a few of the many benefits coconut oil can offer, so the fact that this oil is included in the ingredient list is wonderful.
To use eShave cream, simply put a small amount onto your fingers or wet brush and massage onto the skin. The lather will raise the hair away from your face to provide the best situation for a really close shave.
Rinse completely with cold water when finished.
The best thing about this cream, is that while you are having to pay the price for it you are getting a product that will last a long time and is totally beneficial to the overall health of your skin and not just out to get a good shave. Needless to say, it will be well worth its weight in gold!
While many wet shaving fanatics may give a lot of flak to Gillette and their high priced multi-bladed cartridge based razors, P&G’s Art of Shaving brand is an entirely different beast…to some extent.
If there is one common complaint about the Art of Shaving products that many wet shavers share, its going to be the costs of the products.
Weighing in at a hefty price tag of $23, its double the price of the Proraso Shaving Soap ($10) and substantially higher than the price of Taylor of Old Bond Street’s flagship Sandalwood shaving cream ($15) for about the same amount of volume.
However, on the flipside to the price of this shaving cream is that its one of the most easily accessible products you can obtain within the USA at their brick-and-mortar stores. Unlike the other brands mentioned earlier, Art of Shaving has impressive clout when it comes to availability. With currently over 70 stores across the country, they are relatively accessible for the majority of the population.
With this accessibility, men are easily able to go in and test out the scents of these products and select the one they want. However, if you aren’t one of the lucky men living near an Art of Shaving store, you can easily purchase their products on their website or through online retailers like Amazon.com.
Accessibility aside, the ingredients found in the shaving cream are pretty standard of most luxury shaving creams. Regarding scents, Art of Shaving offers the following lineup:
- Ocean Kelp
If you aren’t familiar with Sandalwood, its a natural ingredient that smells very woodsy and gives off a old familiar scent. Men often liken the scent to smelling like their Grandpa or old school barbershop given that its one of those classic smells that has been added to several different types of shaving products over the years.
Given that sandalwood is portrayed as “manly”, this shaving cream, unlike the Creamo and other citrus scented shaving creams, isn’t necessarily unisex – sorry ladies.
Scent aside, sandalwood does actually provide some great skin care benefits as well. Some of the stand out properties of sandalwood essential oil includes:
- Natural antiseptic agent
- Helps to heal scars and skin spots
- Contains natural anti-aging properties to help tighten and smooth your skin
- Provides relief from inflammation
Another key point of consideration on this product is that its dubbed as being both a brushless and shave brush capable shaving cream. Given all of the great exfoliation benefits that are realized when using a shaving brush, we would only recommend that you use this product with a proper badger hair brush for maximum performance.
Also being that this product is marketed as being brushless, its naturally a bit thinner of a solution as opposed to a shave soap like that of Proraso’s that requires a longer bloom time before you load the shaving brush.
Like most shaving creams, the Art of Shaving shaving cream a little will go a very long way. Therefore when loading your brush for the first time, we would recommend go no longer than 10 seconds and building up a lather in either your scuttle, hand, or directly to your face to test the results (remember you can always add more).
Given that not much shaving cream is required in order to build a rich lather, although this shaving cream is priced considerably higher than similar products in this arena, it should last you several months – even if you shave daily.
Which brings us to the next point, performance.
From the initial loading to the peaks that you experience when testing out the lather on this shaving cream, it does perform just as well when compared to the other heavyweights in this industry. Most importantly the glycerin contained within this product will help provide a slick lubricant that will help retain the moisture in your skin when you go to make the appropriate passes with your razor of choice.
In addition to the lubrication, the cushion of this product when lathered properly is what you come to expect when using luxury shaving cream products and doesn’t fall short.
This shaving cream can be used with cartridge, double edge safety razors, and straight edge razors. Both the cushion and the lubrication provided by this cream will allow for repeatedly comfortable shaves even if you do multiple passes in one shaving session.
It was founded in 1972 by Cyrus Harvey, who decided to name his small business after the Crabapple tree, for its popular use in home apothecary, and John Evelyn (a 17th century botanist). Because of his hard work and dedication, the once family run company has grown into an international brand that produces fragrances, body care products, and more. If you are looking for a cream that not only gets you a close, clean shave, but also takes care of your skin at the same time, then this bottle of Crabtree & Evelyn shaving cream is just what the doctor ordered.
The two MVP ingredients of this formula are Glycerin and Vitamin E. Together they create a product that, when applied, soothes dry skin and allows for the razor to glide gently over the skin, minimizing the risk of nicks and ingrown hairs.
Quick shaves will no longer leave you with sore skin from razor burn, but instead helps to condition the skin with a moisture that lasts all day.
Why is this important?
Your skin is the number one defense against bacteria, viruses, and the sun’s ultra-violet rays. Having healthy skin ensures that your body can produce the amount of Vitamin D it needs and will have the ability to continue maintaining a constant body temperature.
Even something just as simple as the amount of moisture in your shaving cream is important. Cheap aerosol creams can actually cause more damage to the face by drying out the skin and introducing it to dozens of harmful chemicals. That’s why incorporating Vitamin E and a moisturizing liquid, such as Glycerin, is incredibly appealing.
Let’s look at what makes each of these ingredients so important to the overall makeup of a beneficial shaving cream.
Glycerin is a water soluble, thick and odorless liquid derived from vegetable fat. Some major benefits of this liquid are that it is hydrating, conditioning, and a natural exfoliate to the skin and hair. If you suffer from dryness, a shaving cream with Glycerin will not only provide a smooth glide for your razor, but will also help to hydrate your skin and retain moisture within the hair follicles.
This vitamin is both a nutrient and an antioxidant, therefore it is extremely versatile and can be found in all kinds of skincare products. The benefit of using Vitamin E comes in the first hand defense it gives our skin from something called, free radicals. Free radicals are what age our skin over time by damaging the cells and are caused by being exposed to things such as pollens and our good friend, the sun. Using products that apply the talents of nutrients such as Vitamin E help to reduce wrinkles, brown spots, and rough skin.
All other ingredients listed on the Crabtree & Evelyn bottles do not contain any of the harmful chemicals mentioned earlier, such as:
While there is the issue of fragrance being present in this product, the three available scents, Moroccan Myrrh (Green), Indian Sandalwood (Red), and Indian Lime (Black) are actually subtle enough to be inviting. Only a hint of the fragrance is left behind after shaving and isn’t at all overpowering; so, if you like to wear cologne throughout the day, don’t worry about your favorite scent being upstaged.
While this shaving cream might be a bit pricey, the cost is nothing to complain about considering all the product will do for your skin.
Just a little bit will go a long way on fingertips or a brush, yielding a luxurious lather that will make even the roughest of hair a bit easier to get rid of. The shaving cream is available in a 3.5 oz. bottle and comes with an intricately stamped metal roller to help squeeze out every last wisp of foam. At the end of the day, Crabtree & Evelyn’s shaving cream is a popular product that will leave you with refreshed, moisturized skin that will last all day.
This brand, created by Anthony Sosnick, has a mission to use all natural products that are meant to meet your needs. Anthony was an unsatisfied customer who wanted to develop a high quality product that would turn the male grooming industry upside down. However, while his products do have excellent essential oils included in the ingredient list, there is a slight downside; which we will talk about later.
Let’s discuss a couple of the amazing essential oils used in this product before we go any farther. Listed in the ingredients there is eucalyptus, rosemary, peppermint, and hops.
This amazing oil is primarily produced in Australia, as that is where a vast majority of the Eucalyptus trees are found. Eucalyptus is an antiseptic, meaning that it is excellent for healing wounds. So cuts, nicks, and burns will all be soothed with this wonderful oil as well as being protected from any infections.
Lastly, Eucalyptus has a cooling affect that, when added into the shave cream, makes for a luxurious shave.
Part of the mint family, this herb can also be found in the Mediterranean. Rosemary is wonderful for the skin because it has a hydrating and a toning property that helps to rejuvenate skin cells.
It is full of antioxidants, which slows down the aging process slightly by stimulating the growth of cells. Besides these two wonderful facts, the best part about Rosemary is that it is an anti-inflammatory. Those who suffer from things such as dermatitis or eczema can find relief with Rosemary oils.
While these two oils are extremely helpful and make this shaving cream excellent for the skin, there is a slight downfall with the scent.
Peppermint oil can be very overpowering and when it comes to this cream, that seems to be the case. If you are a fan of peppermint then this cream is for you, otherwise you might want to search for something without peppermint oil in it.
The second problem with the shaving cream is that it has some ingredients included that typically should be avoided, such as SLES which can cause cancer mutations and organ toxicity.
Despite this setback, glycerin and squalene are part of the formula which helps to make a good lather; thus ensuring a close and smooth shave.
This shaving cream has a very dense formula, thanks to the squalene, that will make shaving a breeze; free from nicks and razor burn.
A surprising ingredient that has a nice contribution is the hops. Hops helps to relax stressed skin and aids in moisturizing. Combine glorious, relaxing foam with the essential oils and you get a great cream that does its job well.
To use this cream, apply a small amount to either wet fingertips or a damp brush.
Apply to your face in smooth circular motions to create a thick foam. Shave regularly and rinse with cold water when finished. If you are able to overlook the strong peppermint smell, you will be purchasing a cream that has excellent soothing and cooling properties which allows you to obtain a close, cut free shave.
If you aren’t sure what the company Billy Jealousy is all about, they are an award winning company that is designed for men who know how to look good. This company believes that an investment into your appearance will always pay off and they put a great deal of effort into making a product that will help you accomplish your grooming goals. The Hydroplane shaving cream is north of the $15 price tag but it has a few tricks up its sleeve that may justify the price.
So, to fully understand what makes this shaving cream worth the price tag, let’s take a look at the major components of the cream’s functionality.
First of all, Esquire rated this shaving cream as “Best Shave” due to the amazingly clean shave that it provides. The reason behind this clean shave comes from a unique ingredient called, dimethicone, which is a water based silicone that creates an incredibly slick barrier over the skin. Because of this ingredient, combined with other silica (sand), this cream helps to prevent razor drag thus lessening the amount of skin damage after a shave.
Secondly, the ingredient list contains no perfumes, alcohols, or menthol so it is gentle to the skin with natural oils; specifically listed are fruit oils. Thanks to the natural fruit oils, this shave cream provides excellent moisturizing for your skin as well as being odorless. This is perfect for all the fellas out there that like a clean shave without all the fuss of what scent to choose from.
Something to be aware of when purchasing this shave cream is that due to the nature of its ingredients, instead of producing a thick foam, the Hydroplane Super Slick Shave cream is actually clear. If you are the type of shaver that likes to see where you’ve already shaved, this cream is not for you. However, being able to feel your way around is very easy after achieving such a close shave. To use, wet your face with warm water and place a small amount of the cream onto your fingers. Apply in a circular motion to your face and neck. Rinse the razor out between strokes and rinse your face with cool water after you’re finished. The wonderful part about this slick cream is that it does not clog your razor and will rinse out with ease.
Overall, while this shaving cream is on the more expensive side of the spectrum, it has a lot of top notch qualities that make it worth it. Odorless with a slick, clear foam that provides a clean shave free of irritation. You won’t be sorry if you give this award winning cream a shot!
- Lavender: Soothes and calms stressed skin.
- Squalane: Derived from olives and compatible with natural skin oils to keep the skin soft.
- Calendula: Derived from Marigold flowers to use as a medicinal property.
- Caffeine: Reduces puffiness
- Vitamin C: Slows the process of aging.
- Beech Tree Extract: Improves the overall firmness of the skin.
- e Helps to relieve dryness.
All of these amazing natural ingredients stand-alone without being tainted with any harmful chemicals such as SLS, SLES, or Parabens. Because of the quality of their ingredients, Kiehl’s is a company worth looking into.
If the preceding list wasn’t impressive enough, the White Eagle shaving cream also has a few additional ingredients with the sole purpose of creating a cool and refreshing shave for any skin type. Menthol provides the cooling affect after the shaving cream has been washed away and you are out about your day. Camphor, which is an oil naturally taken from an eastern evergreen tree, aids in that cooling affect and further treats oily skin. The last ingredient that stands out is Sesame seed oil, which is used as a carrier oil for skin care products because it absorbs easily into the skin, softening it.
As only a few of the great ingredients used in this product, you can be sure you are getting the bang for your buck when purchasing White Eagle shaving cream. There is, however, a bit of a learning curve when it comes to applying it. Most shaving cream brands recommend wetting your face thoroughly before applying the shaving cream. But with White Eagle, the instructions say no water is required. Simply put a small amount of the product onto your fingers and apply to your face, then shave as normal. Once your shave is complete, rinse with cold water and pat your skin dry with a towel. The only thing to keep in mind when using this shaving cream is that it has a tendency to clog razor blades, so be sure to rinse out the blades with hot water in between each stroke.
Kiehl’s company has realized that more often than not, men’s skin tends to be oilier than woman’s skin. So, they take that into account by formulating their products to help balance out those specific skin concerns. Because of this fact, combined with the convenience of not needing a brush to obtain a lather, this shave cream is perfect for all different stages of experience with shaving. There will be little chance of cutting yourself or receiving razor burn with this product and thanks to the Camphor included within the ingredient list, this cream is perfect for those men with oily skin.
For many that are new to the Proraso brand or wet shaving in general will typically start with the green version given its general use properties. This version of the Proraso shave cream lineup is by and far the most widely distributed and are more than likely able to pick this up at a nearby corner store (we picked up ours at the local boutique pharmacy around the corner).
The cost of this shaving cream tallied up at $11 from our local pharmacy, however it is available through online retailers like Amazon at a cheaper price. Therefore if you are looking to save a buck and can patiently wait for the mail, the latter option will likely be better.
To understand shaving creams its always important to know a bit about the manufacturer behind the blend and a bit of their heritage – the last thing you will want to be doing is using a product from a fly-by-night company that may provide an inferior product.
Proraso was founded by Ludovico Martelli in Florence in 1930. Proraso is by and far one of the more seasoned and notable shaving cream companies within the market. Another old time shaving cream from Europe that Proraso is most commonly compared to would be either Taylor of Old Bond Street or Geo F. Trumper’s (commonly referred to by wet shave enthusiasts simply as Trumper’s).
To put it simply, given Proraso’s long history, it was your grandfathers shaving cream (and perhaps even your great grandfathers)!
So how does it stack up when compared to others on the market? Does it withstand the test of time?
First lets touch on the ingredients, this Porarso shaving cream includes both eucalyptus oil and menthol. When applied initially to your face, it delivers a refreshing and cooling feeling that will linger long after you shave.
As advertised on the side of the box, this Proraso shaving cream contains none of the following:
- Mineral Oils
- Artificial Colors
If there is one suspect ingredient that does stand out on the list of their ingredients its the inclusion of parfum (fragrance). As stated over on the EWG website, the term “Fragrance” on the side of skin and beauty products can actually contain over 3,100 different types of chemicals. This leads it to have a very poor rating from a safety stand point. As we mentioned in our reviews of other shaving creams and soaps as well, while we can’t single out Proraso for having this ingredient in their product, we just wished it weren’t (especially since this shaving cream contains products like menthol that deliver bright wonderful scents).
Touching on scents a bit more, when you first squeeze this shaving cream out of the tube and begin to generate your lather, one of the first things you will notice is the smell of menthol.
The addition of menthol to this product will deliver what seems like a strong scent at first, however, during our testing we found it to dissipate after an hour or so. Therefore, if you regularly wear a cologne, you shouldn’t have any clashing of fragrances when using this shaving cream.
The most important part to any shaving cream is going to be the performance of the cream itself.
When testing the Proraso shaving cream, we found that the cream was rather forgiving when generating a lather. As opposed to other creams, we were able to generate a lather rather easily (typically about 30 to 45 seconds).
To mix our shaving lather we used a standard ceramic coffee mug, however if a mug or scuttle isn’t at your disposal, you can generate a later by loading up your brush and mixing the solution in your hand or even directly applying the loaded brush to your face. Any of the above mentioned lathering methods will be sufficient in order to perform a comfortable shave.
After generating a rich lather with our brush the cream was able to provide a nice foam and slick lubrication on our face. The bubbles of the lather were incredibly small and helped to provide that incredibly nice cushion.
Proraso stays well moisturized and hydrated so you won’t have to worry about the shaving cream running “dry” making you more susceptible to nicks when making the pass with the razor.
There wasn’t any sort of skipping experienced with this razor when making the initial pass with the razor nor the subsequent pass when re-lathering up to clean up any left over whiskers.
Ultimately the performance of this shaving cream will leave you free of general skin irritation and razor bumps.
This shaving cream will work great whether you plan on using with a cartridge razor, double edge safety razor, or your standard straight edge razor.
With its solution designed to not create a thick foamy lather nor required to use a shaving brush for application, it’s breaking a long standing traditions that wet shaving enthusiasts have adhered to for several years.
Creamo Concentrated Shave Cream is a latherless shaving cream that provides a close shave without all the fluff. Primarily applied to your skin with just your hands, its an extraordinarily slick shave cream that provides a thick lubrication while helping to provide a comfortable shave that leaves your skin free of irritation and razor bumps.
Unlike of of the most popular shaving creams on the market today like Taylor of Old Bond Street or Poraso, Creamo’s shaving cream is different given its application doesn’t leave a rich foamy lather like the market leaders.
Creamo’s dared to be different on this front by explaining that the reason for this is due in large part that traditional shaving cream lathers contain a lot of air when mixed in the scuttle or shaving bowl. They claim that when these air pockets within the lather form, the likelihood of nicks and general irritation will also increase. The absence of air Creamo’s shave cream allows for a barrier between both your skin and blade to only be the cream itself.
While wet shave enthusiasts may be accustomed to using a shave brush to apply their shaving cream due to its nature of providing a gentle exfoliation along with raising your hairs on edge for a cleaner cut, this isn’t necessary while applying this shaving cream. In fact, Creamo states that you can simply apply this product directly with your hands after you have applied hot water to your skin for about 30 seconds as the solution is water activated.
If you aren’t ready to part with your shaving brush and scuttle quite yet, don’t be alarmed, you absolutely can still use your existing shaving tools, they just simply aren’t necessary. Should you decide to use your shave brush you will naturally create a bit more of a lather as opposed to using your hands, however performance will largely be the same between both application methods.
Regarding the scent of the Creamo Shaving Cream, it was mostly comprised of citrus based notes. This is likely due to the mixture of Lemon and Papaya extracts contained within this product along with the generic Fragrance ingredient.
Overall we felt that scents for the product is very much one that is unisex. Therefore we feel that this can be both comfortably shared between both men and women in the bathroom with out one gender feeling overly masculine or feminine.
One common point of confusion regarding this product is that given its not like most other shaving creams on the market (regarding the lather), novice shaving enthusiasts may easily confuse this product with popular pre shave oils like Shave Secret or Pacific Shaving Company Shaving Oil. Pre shave oils must be applied in tandem with a shaving cream. Creamo’s shaving cream is simply a shave cream, pre shave oils can safely be used in combination with this product.
Although the bottle of the shaving cream may be a bit smaller in its 6fl oz packaging, a little will go a long way. If you are accustomed to spraying out an ample amount of canned shaving cream into your hand currently. You may have trouble restraining yourself with Creamo.
Per Creamo’s advice, about an almond size amount of shaving cream should be more than enough to serve your entire shave. One bottle of the shaving cream should last you about 90 shaves (or about 4 months if you shave every business day).
If for instance you are using a Merkur DE razor along with feather blades, you should have no problem using this shaving cream. The lubrication and cushion should be enough to support a smooth nick free shave. To ensure that the shave is as comfortable as possible, you do want to make sure you apply hot water regularly throughout the shave to ensure maximum lubrication and ultimately performance.
Men who use a straight razor may find Creamo advantageous given that this cream goes on rather lightly making it much easier to navigate the contours of your face easily allowing you to concentrate on your technique when you make the pass with the blade rather than trying to find stubble lost within the shaving cream.
Should you be using a Mach 3 or the latest Gillette Pro Fusion razor this shaving cream shouldn’t cause any clogging issues that would hinder the performance of the blade. Therefore you can and should use this cream if you are looking to replace a canned razor that you have sitting within the medicine cabinet.
Lastly, should you own an electric shaver that is able to handle a wet shave, this shaving cream will help make the shave a bit smoother. Given that the shaving cream is a bit thinner, and clearer than a traditional shaving cream, this texture will be a welcomed sight for electric shaver owners everywhere allowing for easier view of left over stubble when making the appropriate movements around your face.
With the inclusion of aloe and some key oils contained within the Creamo Shaving cream, your skin should stay well moisturized long after your morning shave. This will help prevent dry skin or general flaking that occurs with some men and the lower end shaving creams. Although this shaving cream provides moisture, we do always recommend that men use an aftershave to flush out the pores of any bacteria in order to prevent infection.
So who is the face behind such interesting scents?
West Coast Shaving company is fairly new with their products hitting the stores in 2007. They create such marvelous products with you at heart because to them, you aren’t just another face; you are family. Whether you are just starting out as a wet shaver or a seasoned expert, this company is there to fulfill your needs. They are even willing to talk you through the steps over the phone! With such great customer service, let’s take a look at the product they are so proud of.
Tabac shaving cream comes packaged in fiery red tube that makes for easy convenience while traveling. While it does not come with a metal rod to help get any remaining product out, that doesn’t seem to be a problem due to the style of the tube. Easy to access and no problem to use. On the tube there is an ingredient list that, while containing perfume, does not have any other harmful chemicals such as parabens.
So that’s a relief!
The ingredient that is most important in regards to making a good lather would be, of course, the addition of glycerin. Thanks to this wonderful liquid, the Tabac shaving cream creates a full and luxurious lather that makes the razor glide right over your face. It is super slick and will greatly prevent the occurrence of nicks, cuts, or razor burn.
To use this particular shaving cream, you can pick your favorite method of application. Whether you prefer using your fingers, a brush, or whipping up the lather in a bowl first, Tabac will work great with any one of these methods. To get the best amount of lather, it is recommended to use a few drops of distilled water, which will create a large amount of foam with a lot of cushion for your razor. Once you whip up your foam, simply wet your face thoroughly with warm water, apply the cream with your preferred method in circular motions, and shave in smooth strokes towards the direction of hair growth. Rinse your face with cool water when finished and pat dry with a clean towel.
If you are on a budget but still want a shaving cream that creates great lather with a slick shave, then this is the product for you. Tabac shaving cream can be purchased from the West Coast Shaving website or Amazon for $10, which is a real steal of a deal! If you decide to purchase this product, you will be receiving a cream that has a manly fragrance with a woodsy elegance, a great lather with plenty of cushion, and an affordable price tag.
Comparing The Best Shaving Cream On The Market
Best Shaving Cream 2018-2019-2020 , we can say that there are many products on the market for wet shaving, available in different scents, shapes, texture and sizes. They include shaving soaps, creams, foams, and gels that come in tubes, jars, cans, tubs, and even wooden bowls.
Best Shaving Cream 2018-2019-2020 Reviews-up to 45% off Selecting the right shaving product can make the difference between healthy skin and skin that is irritated by ingrown hairs, razor burn, nicks or cuts. In a continuation of our personal grooming coverage, I’d like to share a guide to shaving cream with a shaving soap guide soon to follow. I compared 40 different products, and I am sure the final extensive comparison table at the end of the article will help you to find the right product for your face.
Understanding The Difference Between a Shaving Cream vs Shaving Soap
Best Shaving Cream 2018-2019-2020 Reviews-up to 45% off -One of the first mistakes that many men make when trying to decide on a brand new shaving cream is that they often get them confused with shaving soaps.
However, both products couldn’t be more different when it comes to prep and application.
It’s often even more confusing due to the fact that many manufacturers actually make both soaps and creams with nearly the same properties and scents too (i.e. Proraso)!
So what is a shaving soap?
Shaving soaps have been around for centuries and are still just as popular back in their heydays as they are today. Shave soaps will typically come “milled”. This means that the soap has been put through the grinder, made into a mold, and then ground again. Often times soaps may be double or triple milled. Generally speaking, higher end shave soaps will have a higher mill rate than others.
Lower end soaps may have only been milled once and then poured into a mold, most often with these cases the manufacturer was doing this to cut costs and therefore isn’t going to be advertising this.
What’s particularly distinct about shaving soaps is that in order to draw out the soap, you will need to have a shave brush (typically made of badger hair). Shaving soaps require that the soap is bloomed (soaked in water) and then loaded into the brush for several seconds (45 second load times are the average).
Once the brush has been properly loaded it is then applied to your face for a final lather and then ultimately the shave.
Why is this important?
The shave soap process is quite lengthy and what some consider an “old-school” method of shaving. To put it simply, this is how your grandfather shaved back in the day.
There are plenty of wet-shave traditionalists that still hold true to this method of applying their lather as they feel it delivers a slicker lather for ultimately a better performing shave.
In addition, shave soaps typically will be a bit cheaper when compared to their shave cream counterparts. However some of the triple milled soaps can get quite pricey.
Shaving cream helps to reduce razor burns. When you shave dry skin, it increases the chances of cutting top layer of the skin. These cuts may not be deep enough to cause bleeding, but it will cause irritation. When you use the right shaving cream, it acts as a thin barrier and helps to prevent razor from cutting. It is very hard to cut coarse hair when it is dry. If you use the right shaving cream, the hair becomes soft. So, you can shave effortlessly.
Achieving a flawless shaving is the primary objective of using a shaving cream. However, it also nourishes your skin and hair follicles. Shaving creams contain nutrients, which are helpful for infusing your skin with health and vitality. Besides, it moisturizes your face, thus your skin will become nice and fresh after shaving.
