Best Window Air Conditioners of 2018-2019 Window and portable conditioners are the best ways to beat the heat for anyone without a central cooling system. They’re best for small or medium spaces—you certainly can’t keep your whole house ice cold with them—and they can be a bit noisy. Fortunately, they’re also inexpensive and effective.Window air conditioners are designed to cool one or multiple rooms that don’t have access to adequate cooling.

Best Window Air Conditioners of 2018-2019 Experts caution that you need to pick the right size air conditioner for the space—too small and it won’t cool the air enough, too large and it will leave the air too humid. Like most window air conditioners, the FFRE1033Q1 is white and boxy with expandable side panels that allow it to fit windows up to 36 inches wide. • If you have a smaller space to cool and a smaller budget to work with, the Frigidaire FFRA0511R1 is a simple air conditioner for any room up to 150 square feet making it a good pick for home offices. This 5,000 BTU unit gets experts’ top marks for effectiveness and solid marks for noise, but it costs a lot less than most other window units.

The FFRA0511R1 doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles, but many reviewers actually like the simplicity. It has seven temperature settings, two fan settings and two cool settings that can be controlled with dual dials on the unit. There isn’t a remote, timer, or digital thermostat, but reviewers don’t mind, saying it keeps them cool and that’s what matters. They say noise is average for a window air conditioner, but it might not be the best pick for a bedroom for those who don’t want a good amount of white noise.

At just 15 by 16 by 12 inches, the white FFRA0511R1 lives up to its billing of “mini,” but users can install side panels to fit windows up to 36 inches wide. It comes with a one-year warranty that extends up to five years for the sealed system. The only drawback is that it isn’t Energy Star-rated.

Frigidaire Smart Window Air Conditioner, Wi-FI, 8000 BTU, 115V, Works with Amazon Alexa

    Courtesy of HomeDepot.com.

Smart air conditioners have been slower to take off than other Wi-Fi-connected home appliances, but owners say the Frigidaire FGRC0844S1 Cool Connect is worth the upgrade. This 8,000 BTU unit is best for medium-size rooms up to 350 square feet.

The Energy Star-certified Cool Connect’s biggest draw is its Wi-Fi connectivity, which allows iPhone or Android users to fully schedule and operate the air conditioner from anywhere. If you don’t carry your phone around your home, the Cool Connect also comes with a remote control. Honeywell MN10CESWW 10,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Remote Control - White

    Courtesy of HomeDepot.com.

Portable air conditioners can be a good alternative for anyone who can’t install a window unit, and owners say the Honeywell MN10CESWW is among your best choices. This 10,000 BTU unit is ideal for rooms up to 350 square feet.

The Honeywell features an LCD display and digital controls that owners say are easy to use, though a few complain they’re too sensitive. It also has a built-in dehumidifier, a programmable timer, and a remote control.

Experts with The Sweethome say it’s the quietest portable air conditioner they tested at low settings, and owners say it’s no noisier than a typical window air conditioner.

While you don’t get a color choice with most air conditioners, the Honeywell comes in black; black and silver; and white. It’s about 29 inches high, 18 inches wide and 15 inches deep, and unlike window air conditioners, it demands some floor space. The auto-evaporation system means users don’t have to empty a drip pan, but water may still have to be drained in high-humidity conditions. The unit has a one-year warranty that extends to five years for the sealed system.

here are many things to consider when shopping for a window air conditioner, like size and maintenance. To learn more, here are 5 things to consider when shopping for a window AC:

Top 5 Things to Consider When Shopping  a Window AC

    1. Cooling Capacity

Cooling capacity should be your first consideration before buying a window AC. Cooling power is measured in British Thermal Units, or BTUs, per hour–the basic measure of thermal energy. For the best efficiency and effectiveness, stick with a unit that has a BTU level designed to fit your space. A window AC with too little BTU power will run continuously to try to cool a large space and, in the process, will eat up your energy budget. A window AC that’s too large for your space won’t cool and dehumidify your space evenly, leaving your room air susceptible to uncomfortable hot and cold pockets.

To find your ideal cooling capacity, calculate the size of the space you want cooled in square feet. Then use the chart below to find the right amount of BTUs.

Area To Be Cooled (Sq. Ft.)Capacity Needed (BTUs Per Hour)
    100 to 150 sq. ft.5,000 BTUs
    150 to 250 sq. ft.6,000 BTUs
    250 to 300 sq. ft.7,000 BTUs
    300 to 350 sq. ft.8,000 BTUs
    350 to 400 sq. ft.9,000 BTUs
    400 to 450 sq. ft.10,000 BTUs
    450 to 550 sq. ft.12,000 BTUs
    550 to 700 sq. ft.14,000 BTUs
    700 to 1,000 sq. ft.18,000 BTUs
    1,000 to 1,200 sq. ft.21,000 BTUs
    1,200 to 1,400 sq. ft.23,000 BTUs

For a more detailed estimate, take these factors into consideration, too:

    • Ceiling Height — The estimates above assume traditional 8-ft. ceiling heights. You may want to increase your BTU level if your ceilings are higher than 8 ft.
    • Sunlight — Is your room sunny during the day? If so, increase your BTU power by 10 percent.
    • Number of People — Will more than 2 people regularly occupy the room? For each additional person, you’ll need 600 BTUs of cooling capacity.
    • Kitchen — Will you be installing your window AC in a kitchen? If so, increase the capacity by 4,000 BTUs.

    2.Installation

Most window AC models are designed to fit inside standard double-hung windows. For step-by-step directions on how to install one through a window, check out our video and article on How to Install a Window AC.

However, many models can also be installed inside a custom-created wall space with special mounting hardware. This is a useful alternative if your window’s dimensions are too small or too large or if you don’t have vertical sash windows.Installed Window AC

    • Window: Measure the dimensions inside the window frame exactly, paying special attention to the width. Then, look for the minimum and maximum window width dimensions listed in the AC’s specifications. Don’t worry if your model doesn’t extend to fit your window frame exactly. All window air conditioners come with installation kits, which include side curtains to seal off the extra space left on each side of a window or wall opening.
    • Wall: For wall installations, first make sure the model you want can accommodate this type of installation and that you have the appropriate installation kit. Then, make note of the dimensions of the finished wall opening, which should be listed in the product’s specifications. Use these dimensions for the wall opening. If necessary, consult a professional. You can view available window ACs that can also be installed through a wall here.

When completely installed–whether in a window or through a wall–the window air conditioner will sit level inside the opening, with the warm air exhaust system facing outside and the cooling system facing inside. In addition, many window air conditioners feature a slide-out chassis and a rugged mounting sleeve that stabilize and secure the unit, while giving you easy access to it for maintenance. All window air conditioners come with detailed, easy-to-follow instructions for installation.

    3. Electrical Requirements

Because window air conditioners are more powerful than other common household appliances, make sure your existing electrical system meets the needs of the unit’s electrical requirements. Most room air conditioners operate on 115-, 125- or 220-volt circuits. ACs with cooling capacities below 15,000 BTUs usually run on standard residential (115- to 125-volt) circuits. Window ACs with cooling capacities above 15,000 BTUs usually run on 220-volt circuits. With these models, you may need to install special electrical wiring or seek out an electrician to assist you.

Electrical requirements–including voltage, amps, and watts–will be listed in the specifications. In addition, the correct plug face type may be pictured or listed by its NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) classification.

    4. Energy Efficiency

energy starIn general, window air conditioners are a more economical choice than central air conditioners. They cost less to purchase and–if sized correctly–are cheaper to operate over the long-term. To gauge a unit’s energy efficiency, look for two things in the product’s specifications: Energy Star rating and/or EER number.

Energy Star-rated room air conditioners use approximately 10 percent less energy than comparable models and save you money on operating costs. These efficient ACs also have features that give you better control over operation and energy output. These include programmable timers, digital thermostats, and multiple cooling speeds. Most states also offer rebates for customers who purchase an Energy Star model. Friedrich Window AC

An EER (or Energy Efficiency Ratio) measurement tells you how many BTUs the unit uses for each watt of power. Use this as a rule of thumb: the higher the EER, the more efficient the air conditioner. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, you should shop for a room air conditioner that has an EER of at least 10.0 for the best energy- and cost-savings. Friedrich window air conditioners are known for both their high EERs and Energy Star-qualified operation.

    5.Maintenance

Friedrich Kuhl BackWindow air conditioners require periodic maintenance to keep them in top condition. They can be vulnerable to outside dirt and debris, which can accumulate inside or on the back. In addition, dust and particles will build up on the air conditioner’s air filter overtime. If left untreated, all of these things will eventually combine to reduce the effectiveness of your air conditioner.

To ensure long-lasting operation, clean it thoroughly at least once per year. A window AC with a slide-out chassis make this convenient because all you have to do is slide the unit out to access it. Most air filters are washable with mild soap and water. For specific maintenance tips for your model, refer to your owner’s manual.

For protection from pests, some room ACs, like the Friedrich Kuhl Series, are equipped with mosquito traps that allow condensation to flow outside without letting insects inside.

    Choosing an Air Conditioner

When figuring out which type of air conditioner you need, consider the following:

    • Frequency of use
    • Room size
    • Whether it will be in a room with a lot of sun exposure or a kitchen with hot appliances
    • Whether it will be permanent or temporary

You’ll also want to make note of any significant features that would increase convenience for you, such as remote controls, noise damping technology or smart features.

    Portable Air Conditioners

    • These types of air conditioners offer more flexibility than window or in-wall air conditioners since they don’t require permanent installation and can be moved from room to room. If you plan on transporting your portable unit regularly, be sure to find a model with casters since they can be quite heavy. These units use the air from inside the room to cool the condenser and exhaust the hot air out of a hose that vents through a window, sliding door, wall or ceiling. There are a few ways water is drained from portable air conditioners. In self-evaporating systems, often referred to as “swamp coolers,” the water condensation is recycled back into the air. If you buy a condensate pump, excess water will be pumped outside through a hose. Other models require you to manually empty the water tank every few hours.Advantages of a portable air conditioner:
      • Easy set up and doesn’t require permanent installation
      • Can be moved from room to room

      Available features:

      • Casters for easy movement
      • Timer
      • Remote control

      Considerations:

      • Heavy
      • Takes up floor space

      Hose systems vs. evaporative systems

Units with hose systems use air from the room to cool their condensers. Units with evaporative systems don’t have a compressor or condenser. Instead, they evaporate water which absorbs heat, cooling the air. They don’t need hoses to vent heat outside, which makes them more portable than hose systems.

      Advantages of an evaporative cooler:

      • Beneficial in dry climates since it adds moisture to the air
      • More portable than hose systems

      Considerations:

      • Requires constant supply of water
      • Must be well maintained because of potential mold and bacteria

    Window Air Conditioners

    • Available in a number of sizes and cooling capacities, these types of units can be used as a primary cooling source in a room, or in combination with your central AC. Before purchasing a window unit, you’ll want to take measurements to ensure it will properly fit your window. You’ll also want to look at the outlet in your wall to make sure it’s compatible with the kind of plug on the AC unit.Window units are made for three different types of windows — standard, slider and casement. These units are installed in an open window with the hot air exhaust facing outside and the cool air return system facing inside. A shaded window will offer extra cooling efficiency.

      Fixed chassis vs. slide-out chassis

A chassis is a frame that supports the air conditioner. It’s important to note whether the chassis is fixed or not because units with a slide-out chassis can be installed in a window or a wall, while a fixed-chassis unit can only be installed in a window. A slide-out chassis enables easy maintenance and cleaning since the inside of the machine is easily accessible once you slide out the chassis.

Advantages of a window air conditioner:

      • Allows for extra floor space
      • Easy to install and uninstall

      Available features:

      • Some models have a slide-out chassis
      • Timer
      • Remote control

      Considerations:

      • Requires installation
      • Takes up window space
      • Limited to use in one room

    Through-the-Wall Air Conditioners

    • Wall air conditioners are very similar to window air conditioners with the main difference being that they sit in your wall instead of in a window opening. These units exhaust heat and humidity from the room to the outside and fit through a hole in an exterior wall. They require a sleeve, which is a metal device that holds the air conditioner in the wall to support its weight. If you already have a sleeve installed, you’ll need to identify what type it is. If there’s no existing sleeve and you need to put a hole in your wall, professional installation is recommended.

      Slide-out chassis vs. through-the-wall sleeves

Slide-out chassis air conditioners come as one unit — the chassis and the sleeve. These units vent through the sides and the back of the air conditioner. Through-the-wall air conditioners do not come with a sleeve. Sleeves are sold separately and these units only vent through the back of the air conditioner.

Advantages of a through-the-wall air conditioner:

      • Typically available in higher cooling capacities than window units
      • Allows for extra window space
      • Can be placed almost anywhere
      • Airtight and secure fit

      Available features:

      • Remote control
      • Timer
      • Digital thermostat

      Considerations:

      • Labor intensive installation
      • More difficult than window units to uninstall
      • Weighs slightly more than window units

    BTUs

    • BTUs (British Thermal Units) measure the amount of heat an air conditioner can remove from the air over a given period of time. The higher the number, the greater the cooling capacity, but bigger isn’t always better. In order to properly cool a room you have to match the BTU capacity of the air conditioner to the dimensions of the room that needs cooling. An underpowered air conditioner won’t cool a large room properly. On the other hand, one that has too high of a BTU rating cools the area so quickly that it doesn’t have time to dehumidify the air, which can leave the space feeling cold and clammy. When selecting the appropriate BTU rating to match a room by square feet, consider ceiling height, sizes of windows and doorways, and whether the unit will be in a sunny room or a kitchen with extra heat from appliances.Use the chart below to help you find the right BTU capacity for your space

    Installing a Window Unit

    • All window air conditioners come with an installation kit and you can usually install them yourself. You may need to attach a support bracket to the windowsill to support the weight of the unit. Be sure to use caution and have someone help you lift the air conditioner since they can be very heavy. Attach the accordion-like panels to the side of the unit and then set it on the support bracket, making sure it snaps into place. Once the air conditioner is secure, lower the window on top of it and extend the panels to both sides of the frame and screw them into place. Then, fill any gaps with foam weather stripping to provide a tight seal that will prevent heat, dust and insects from getting inside.
